Career Options Available for Family Physician Jobs

By Wanda Edwards

Afters years of hard work getting through medical school, many doctors are excited to begin their medical career. Many medical school graduates will begin looking for family physician jobs in a traditional family practice setting, which may be in a small town, a large metropolitan area, or someplace in between. Because there is very little turnover in these positions, finding a new job in this area of the medical industry can be a challenge. Often those looking to settle into a long-term option will need to be flexible in the location and may not get to live in the location of their choosing immediately after graduation.

Another option that many doctors take advantage of, including new doctors who have not yet settled into a permanent position, is working on a contract basis as a locum tenens. Locum tenens are traveling doctors who work in a variety of settings, ranging from hospitals to small medical officers in locations from rural towns to large metro areas. Essentially, they fill the shoes of the permanent medical professional on staff at times when he or she needs to be away from the office for an extended period of time. This may include a vacation, a maternity leave, or another such event that requires a significant amount of time away from the office. Sometimes when a medical professional needs to take time off work, the medical center has enough staff on hand to cover for him or her. However, other times it is not possible to cover for the doctor and a locum tenens needs to be hired to ensure all patients receive proper care.

When you are considering the family physician jobs available to you, it is important to consider all of the options and weigh them against what you want out of life, such as the ability to travel in your job or the desire to stay in one location for the long-term.

How to Become an Astronaut

  1. 1
Know that you must be between 5 feet 4 inches and 6 feet 4 inches tall to be a pilot and between 4 feet 10 1/2 inches and 6 feet 4 inches to be a mission specialist. You also need to be in top physical condition and have great stamina.
  2. 2
Maintain an excellent academic record in your undergraduate and graduate studies. Many astronauts have doctoral degrees.
  3. 3
Choose a scientific field for your bachelor's degree that you can use if you become an astronaut. Possibilities include medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, aerospace engineering and mathematics.
  4. 4
Make certain you have at least 3 years of work experience in your field before applying as a mission specialist. An acceptable substitution might be a 2-year graduate degree with 1 year of experience.
  5. 5
Have at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft, preferably with flight-test experience, if you wish to be a mission pilot.
  6. 6
Send for an application package (see Tips for the address). You'll have to pass the strict NASA physical as a basic qualification.
  7. 7
Realize that if you're accepted as an astronaut candidate, you're committing yourself to a training period of 1 to 2 years in Houston without a guarantee that you'll ever go into space. Training will be intense and often in low-gravity conditions. It will include land and sea survival training and scuba diving.
  8. 8
Prepare to remain with NASA for at least 5 years if you pass the training period and are accepted as an astronaut.

Information and resources on becoming an amateur radio operator

Becoming an Amateur Radio Operator is as easy as it is rewarding. It is best to begin by contacting the Amateur Radio Club (or Ham Club as they are commonly known) in your area. Some Ham Clubs work closely with city and county offices providing communications during community events and/or natural disasters, therefore paying a visit to a local town hall or county seat is often beneficial. These offices will most likely be able to provide names of area Amateur Radio enthusiast. If, however, there is no local information, an interested party may contact the American Radio Relay League directly by searching for them on the Net. This web site provides a listing of over 2,000 affiliated Ham Clubs. By simply typing in some general location information, a specific area or regional club should be easy to find.

After locating an area club and talking with some of its active members, it may be appropriate to attend an actual meeting. This first hand exposure to both long time and newly licensed Amateur Radio operators provides a clear picture of what Ham Radio is all about - licensed individuals of all ages and walks of life joining together in the common hobby of communications.

The next step is actually obtaining a beginner’s license. Although rules for earning an Amateur Radio license may vary some from country to country, in the United States the most popular beginner’s license is the Technician Class license. This license is obtained by correctly answering a 35 multiple-choice test written with the beginner in mind. This test does not require the knowledge of Morse code as do future licensing upgrades, but covers questions regarding basic regulations, operating practices, and electronics theory. Successful completion of this test authorizes new operators to use all amateur VHF and UHF frequencies above 50 MHz. In preparing for the exam, be sure to check with area Ham Clubs for training classes and review sessions which are generally offered. Purchasing the book, “Now You’re Talking! All You Need For Your First Amateur Radio License” may also be a sound investment on the road to achieving Technician status.

After acquiring the beginner’s license, check with other Ham Radio operators for detailed information on the purchases of two-way radio equipment. Long time Hams will know the areas most reliable retail businesses as well as on-line outlet stores. Also, consider attending a Hamfest (which to the layman might best be described as the ultimate flea market for radio equipment.) It would be wise to have an accomplished Amateur Radio operator accompany a first time buyer to such an event.

With the Technician Class achieved, moving up the licensing ladder to the General Class will prove to be a giant step in operating privileges. Achieving the status of General allows for both cross-country and word-wide communications.

The third class license entitled Extra Class authorizes its licensees to operate on all frequencies allocated to the Amateur Service. Both of these Class upgrades require comprehensive testing. Again, valuable instruction and review are available through area Ham Clubs.

So for the would-be Amateur Radio operator, advice is simple. Locate an area Ham club, utilize the assistance of knowledgable Ham operators, glean the benefits of the skills acquired, and enjoy a hobby that connects those involved with the entire world.

How to Be a Writer

    Practice, Practice, Practice

  1. Step 1
Become a blog writer. Blog writing has quickly become a great way for new and experienced writers to keep doing what they love--writing! Also, some bloggers get sponsored and turn their hobby into a paid job.
  2. Step 2
Be a journal writer. Journal writing is a great way to practice organizing your thoughts without the added stress of trying to make up characters and events.
  3. Step 3
Be a email writer. Emails are opportunities to practice writing. Think about how your writing in emails expresses your personality. You can use similar styles when your write dialogue between characters.
  4. Find Your Market

  5. Step 1
Decide what kind of writing you want to do.
  6. Step 2
Learn about what sells in your market. The best way to do this is by reading. If you are interested in mystery, pick up a couple of the most popular, recent mysteries. Figure out what makes a good mystery.
  7. Step 3
Figure out what kind of places would hire you and what kind of publishers would publish your work. The Writer's Market lists all of the publishers in America. It also gives tips on how to approach different publishers. If you want an office job, you can learn about different companies by looking on internet job boards.
  8. Get in Through the Door

  9. Step 1
Introduce yourself to a couple publishers or companies. You can do this by asking someone you know to introduce you to an editor or by sending an email or letter.
  10. Step 2
Convince an editor that you and their company have the same goals. This only means that if a children's book publisher wants manuscripts that teach children right from wrong, you propose a book that discusses exactly what the publisher wants. This also means that you do not propose books or ideas the publisher does not want.
  11. Step 3
Consider getting an agent. This could help save you time on finding and courting the right market.

Building a resume through volunteer opportunities and hobbies

Many people shy away from placing volunteer work and hobbies on a resume. While they probably think that the work they do is important, they may also feel that a potential employer will not. Many worry that employers will view placing these kinds of tasks on a resume as the sign of someone who lacks any real skills at all.

However, quite the opposite can be true. If an individual is performing volunteer work on a regular basis or has turned a hobby into a nearly full-time job, these tasks can actually help you land the job of your dreams. Knowing how to explain these duties on your resume will show prospective employers the true depth of your skills and talents.

Volunteer Work

Most people know that volunteering can be a great way to network. You meet people from different industries and fields that you might not usually meet. In addition, volunteering often exposes us to tasks and responsibilities that are different from our daily routine. It is these new tasks that are learned through volunteer opportunities that can expand a resume.

For example, someone who is an accountant but who also volunteers in a nursing home on a regular basis is expanding his resume and his range of potential employers at the same time. By simply putting on his resume that he volunteers 15 hours a week in the business office of a nursing home, he has opened the doors to jobs that otherwise might be closed.

This individual can explain his accounting experience on his resume, but he can also explain that he understands the intricacies and details of maintaining financial records in a medical facility—which are often much more scrutinized than in some other venues. This piece of information would probably open up job opportunities working in the financial sector of the medical industry simply because this person already has a basic understanding of the responsibilities involved. Many employers look favorably on a person with prior experience because they require less on-the-job training.

Hobbies

A hobby may seem a little more difficult to work into a resume. The idea of tinkering with old cars in the garage may not seem very important at all. However, the skills acquired from fixing up and showing old cars might be just what your next employer is looking for.

For example, if you regularly fix up and show antique cars, you learn the internal workings of the cars. You also learn how to work within financial and mechanical limits to get the cars running. Finally, you learn how to show the car to other car enthusiasts—especially if you have ever won any awards.

For a person working in mechanics or engineering, these skills can be invaluable. In addition, for a person working in marketing or public relations, the idea of knowing how to present your cars and actually win awards can certainly show you understand the nuances of grabbing people’s attention.

While restoring antique vehicles may bring enjoyment on the weekends, it could also help you land a job that you had never even thought about. The trick to using volunteer work or hobbies on your resume is to know how to explain them.

Writing the Resume

When placing volunteer work or a full-time hobby on your resume, include it in your work experience like any other job. Put the work in chronological order, listing your title (if any), along with your duties and responsibilities. Also, if you have received any awards because of your volunteer efforts or hobby, be sure to list those.

The real key to making your volunteering or hobby experience a part of your resume is to do just that: make it a part of your resume. Do not be ashamed of your volunteer work. The experience it gives you may just be what gets you the job of your dreams.

Money - 8 Reasons Not to Work For It

By Nisa Chitakasem

Many of us are money driven. This is understandable but when this is the only thing we have going for us - perhaps it's time to stop, think, evaluate and improve. I hear too many of the people around me working solely for money. I am no guru in this but this is my take on what happens:

1. Money you have - but no time to spend it
2. Tired, stressed and grumpy - makes you an unpleasant bunny to be around!
3. No time for you - will you burn out? How's your health?
4. No time for your friends - or for being there for them.
5. No time for family - to see mum, dad, partner, kids. Will they resent you? Will you regret it later? When will they be gone?
6. A missed opportunity - of what could have been but never was. Were you meant to be the next Britney? The next Richard Branson or Steve Jobs? Perhaps the greatest writer, architect, snowball thrower of all time! - (but not in this lifetime if you keep going as you are)
7. No real passion - for work, for hobbies, for life. I have found that your passion disappears when you are doing something you do not enjoy day in and day out. You may enjoy other activities or even some bits of work - but never fully. This article goes through the reasons why people most commonly hate their jobs
8. You can get by with less than you think. Really? Yes. Think about it. How much and what do you really need?

For me - I've always thought having money would be good and yes it is a requirement especially in this day and age to have some in order to get by. But - if it is the only thing that you are doing your job for - please do think again. We can help you find another option. Something that you actually want to do, find some enjoyment out of AND that meets your money requirements.
